Even though Walgreens’ decision doesn’t apply to his state, which has some of the most progressive abortion rights in the nation, Newsom threatened the company. “We’re done,” tweeted the governor. “California won’t be doing business with @walgreens – or any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women’s lives at risk.”

criticizedthis week for taking “personal travel” while his state was in the throes of a devestating winter storm. While the governor of California clearly has no jurisdiction to mandate how an independent company operates in other states, it is unclear if Walgreens will be harmed by Newsom’s threat to cut ties in the Golden State. The chain currently operates nearly 9,000 stores, less than 600 of which are in California.
