Louisiana middle school teacher charged with cocaine possession at school

Baton Rouge police reportedly found a middle school teacher with cocaine in her wallet during a random search with a drug dog Tuesday.

Virginia Somers, 47, a math intervention teacher at Westdale Middle School, told officials it belonged to a friend who gave it to her at the Louisiana State University football tailgate the previous Saturday, WAFB reported.

Police say they searched her car and found marijuana and pipes, while the substance in her wallet was tested and confirmed to be cocaine, leading to charges of drug possession and paraphernalia.

Somers reportedly has taught at the school for more than a decade.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Public School System said it is handling the issue according to its policies. “This behavior is not condoned by our district and we remain committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and drug-free environment for all students and staff,” it said in a statement.
